The Safety Formula - Episode 8: Rules and Regulations

In our micro-series, The Safety Formula, we explore the cutting-edge worlds of Formula 1 technology and innovations in the ever-evolving world of cybersecurity. Welcome to Episode 8: Rules and Regulations, where we look at the intricacies of F1 regulations and cybersecurity firewalls and how they maintain order and safety in their respective domains.

Protective Measures Ensure Safety

In cybersecurity and Formula 1, a set of rules must be created to create a secure and fair environment. In F1, the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) establishes rules around car specifications, racing protocols, and driver conduct to ensure the safety and integrity of the sport.

In the 2023 season, the Ferrari SF-23 had to navigate several changes in the Technical Regulations. Examples include a rounded top required on the roll hoop (which sits behind the driver’s head) to reduce the chance of it digging into the ground during an accident, a 2kg reduction in the minimum weight of the car to 796kg, and an increase in the width of the rear-view mirror to 200mm to improve driver visibility.

Predefined Rules of Cybersecurity Firewalls

While FIA regulations protect and maintain integrity and safety in F1, in cybersecurity, this job falls to a firewall. A firewall uses a set of predefined rules to regulate inbound and outbound traffic. Determining safe from unsafe, it oversees connection attempts and decides which to allow and block.

Thanks to these predefined rules, a firewall can stop malicious entities and maintain the confidentiality of data within. From safeguarding data to preventing cyber-attacks to maintaining a secure user experience, firewalls form the foundation of a secure digital framework.

Evolving with the Times

In Formula 1, there’s a continuous flow of new rules and regulations as the sport evolves. One example from the 2023 season is doubling the number of sprint races. While most rules are introduced at the start of a new season, some changes can occur mid-season.

Firewall rules and configurations are similarly updated to counteract new cyber-attacks and vulnerabilities. Akin to mid-season F1 rule changes, urgent firewall updates may be deployed to respond to immediate threats, fortifying the security mid-operation.

Whether navigating a racetrack or a network, rules and regulations are essential to safety and security. Both firewalls and the FIA must stay up-to-date with the latest advances to play their roles effectively.
